Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt - Apache Style

Okay, so I have been afraid. I have been scared. And, yes, I have had doubt. It has always been my fear to not run rewrite logs - even for a second - on live systems.

Well, I am now over that one. Last night I set up rewrite logs on our apache servers.

# < IfDefine serverA >
#RewriteLog 9
#RewriteLog /logs/prod/rewrite_logs/www.rewrite.log.serverA
#</IfDefine>
#<IfDefine serverB>
#RewriteLog 9
#RewriteLog /logs/prod/rewrite_logs/www.rewrite.log.serverB
#</IfDefine>
#<IfDefine serverC>
#RewriteLog 9
#RewriteLog /logs/prod/rewrite_logs/www.rewrite.log.serverC
#</IfDefine>
#<IfDefine serverD>
#RewriteLog 9
#RewriteLog /logs/prod/rewrite_logs/www.rewrite.log.serverD
#</IfDefine>

Now, I did not run them for long - maybe 3-4 minutes.

Performance was fine - granted I was not running them during peak performance.

Speed of filling logs was acceptable - about 1Meg per second per box.

So, I ended up with about 10Gig of logs by the time I did my testing and got them turned off.

However, they didn’t really tell me much - even at RewriteLog 9. They basically told me most of what I was already seeing. This was basically that my stanza was being ignored. However, it was interesting to watch and see that it did indeed parse all our stuff, which, at least at some level given the shear number of rewrites we have, does slow the systems down some. Fortunately, we are on fairly modern equipment, so it can handle the rush.

So, for both of you reading this, do not be as I have been. Do not be afraid to write out those rewrite logs. Do not leave them running for long unless you got LOTS of hard drive space.

Four UPS’s

Four UPS’s did not make the trip to Indianapolis successfully.  All four have dead batteries.  What’s up with that?  Unfortunately the cost of a new battery is almost as much as a UPS.

So, I went to Fry’s and bought three new ones today.  One is quite a bit bigger than my old ones and will have two computers a router and a switch on it.  The two computers used to be in separate areas.  But in our new location, they are a few feet away, so a better UPS than what we had before takes care of both of them.  Also, this particular one has a connector for cable.  This is very good as we are using a cable provider for our internet, telephone, and (dare I say it) television stations.  Compared to what we were paying in Lexington, we are getting the television part for free - i.e. what it used to cost us for internet and telephone.

church resume

I’ve thought about this for a while, and I think I am going to do it.  I am going to build and maintain a “church resume”.  Much like you do for your work, this is a document of historical fact that contains talking points.  For me, the talking points would be as much, if not more, for my memory.  It may or may not be something I would necessarily show someone else - perhaps my priest, perhaps my wife.  Perhaps “chronicle” might be a better word than resume.

Examples might include:

Started attending Nicholasville United Methodist Church in 5th grade - age 9 - 1976
Junior year in High School - Youth representative on Churh Council
Started attending Calvary Baptist Church (General Assembly of Regular Baptist Churchs) - Age 18 - 1986
Baptized - Age 19 - Calvary Baptist Church, Nicholasville, Kentucky
Started Local Licensed Pastor program - United Methodist Church - Age 25 - 1993
Ordained a Local Licensed Pastor - 1994
Local Pastor - Robert’s Chapel - 1994 - 1996
Performed wedding between __ and ___ 1995
Performed funeral for Linda Mounts’ mother 1996
Sunday School Teacher - First United Methodist Church - High School Class - 1997-1999 - Everette Washington
Chairman Finance Committee - First United Methodist Church - 1997-1999
Performed funeral for Albert Buffin, 1999
Performed funeral for Claristine Buffin, 2002
Performed funeral for Gabriel Davidson, 2004
Performed funeral for ___
Charismated - St. Athanasius Orthodox Church - 2003
Joined Orthodox Church - 2003
Member Mission Council - 2005-2006

I know this isn’t complete (for example, i’ve done like 9 funerals), but that is the idea.

Any other ideas?
